Motivation
Although I was interested in the details of chessprogramming since
my youth, it was not before 2009 when I finaly managed to get a deeper
insight to this topic by reading books and searching in the web.
In earlier days it was difficult to get valuable information and there were only
few books about the topic on the market ( A classical one is "chess skill in man and machine" published in 1977 ).
Today things have changed, you can find anything you like in the web.
For many years I have collected nearly all available chessmachines
you can buy for money.
This included the classical types using 8-bit-CPUs ( like the 6502-CPU ),
as well as later the top-rated machines like the RISC 2500 and Mephisto London,
rated around 2300 ELO.
Today bitmap-based engines clearly have the upper-hand in playing-strength
and all recent top-ranked programs are bitmap-based.
Using bitmaps it is possible to implement nearly all chess-knowledge you can imagine, if once you have understood the way how to do it.
This fascination remains until today, the value of any modifications can easily be measured by playing games and using test-positions.
Time available is the only limit.
